GURUGRAM: A resident of Assam has been arrested by police for allegedly duping many people by posing as an employee of online payment portal Paytm. He was produced in a city court on Tuesday and sent to six days in police custody for questioning. The accused, Rohit, from Lakhimpur in Assam, confessed to having duped over 50 people so far. Police said he had got access to Paytm’s page where customers complain about the e-wallet firm’s products and service, and share names and contact numbers. The accused used to call the complainants posing as a Paytm employee.
“He would ask for their account details, and when customers gave him those in good faith, he would disconnect the call immediately and transfer money to his account,” said inspector Anand Yadav, who is probing the case. “The accused duped some customers of online payment portal Mobikwik as well using similar methods,” the investigator added. The Gurgaon police received their first complaint in a case in 2016.
